Sony recenlty announced that they will no long be selling 3.5 inch floppy disks in Japan as of March 2011. The 30 year old disk medium has finally run its course as CDs, DVDs, and Flash Drives surpassed it in price, capacity, and reliability. Although the floppy disk may still be around for years to come, it has long become a forgotten choice as an alternative storage source. Whereas the 3.5 floppy only handled 1.4mb of data, CDs can hold 650mb, DVDs hold over 4gb, and flash drive have already surpassed 32gb and continue to grow. The news about the floppy disks demise should not come as a surprise to anyone. But, it will go down in technology history as one of the most critical forms of portable storage mediums used and one that helped solidify the use of PC for the masses.
